10 Day Outline
-Students will have read the book The Wizard of OZ by L. Frank Baum prior to this unit lesson starting.
Day 1: Introduction to Wizard of Oz Movie
The students will watch the movie The Wizard of Oz! They will then compare and contrast the movie and the book. They will get in groups and discuss the components that the movie and the book have. Venn Diagram Doc.
*(The purpose of the venn diagram is to easily compare and contrast the book with the movie in an easy format for the students to follow)
Day 2: Science Discovery Day
The students will learn about tornados and cyclones. They will end up creating their very own tornado in a liter bottle. They will then later that day review what they know about bones. They will discuss how a scarecrow is made with no bones and then create a scarecrow of their own. Scarecrow Craft Rubric (http://www.craftsforkids.com/projects/scarecrow.htm)
*(The purpose of this activity is for the students to have a chance to create their own scarecrow after reviewing about bones. It’s a fun activity the students will enjoy completing on their science discovery day. The attached rubric will show them exactly what the teacher expects)
Day 3: All around the States Day
If there was a Yellow Brick road between your house and the White House, how long would it take you to get there if you walked all the way. The students will discover how long it will take them to walk to the White House as if they were the characters in The Wizard of OZ. They will then discuss what places they would see along the way and how would their journey be different 100 years ago. They will have to record their found discoveries and total distance.
Day 4: A day in the 1900’s
Today the class will live for a day like is was in the 1900 schools. They will have only books- no tv, recorded music, computers or videos. The teacher and students can only use chalk and the chalkboards. They will have to share books and further mimic the 1900 schoolroom. As they go throughout their day they will learn about the 1900’s and what little resources were available to the students and the teachers. Question Sheet
*(The purpose of the question sheet is for the students to record what they realize throughout the day about the 1900 classroom. They will have to explain how they would feel while living in that time and going to school.)
Day 5: Dramatic Friday
Students will start off by watching the video “If I Only Had a Brain” on youtube. Question Page (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOKK8mAkiUI) In the movie, the scarecrow, the tin man and lion sang songs about themselves and what they wanted, all to the same tune. Ask the students -What might other characters from the movie have sung to the tune of “If I only had a brain/heart/the nerve?” Then have the students come up with their own “lyric” to the song that they would want them self. Have them record their own lyric and then share with class what they would want.
*(The purpose of the youtube video is to capture the student’s attention. They will listen along to the song and discuss what the scarecrow wanted and why. It’s a great way for the students to start thinking of what they would want from the oz.)
Day 6: Creative Writing
The students will have a few different writing assignments to complete by the end of day. They will begin by drawing their favorite character (fully colored) and write a description of that character. Creative Writing Packet.
*(The purpose of the creative writing packet is for the students to have a chance to write and describe in detail. They will have the chance to put them self in the shoes of Dorothy and create their own “Wizard of oz” story. They will have to be creative and think about what they want to write)
Day 7: Brick by Brick
If the students haven’t completed their packet, let them complete it to hand in for a grade. Make a yellow brick road of paper for your classroom floor (as many bricks as needed and large size). As a class have the students find out how many bricks would it take to make your yellow brick road cross the hall, run across the playground. What if the bricks were smaller or larger? Have them record their findings.
Day 8: Difference Day
Today the class will discuss the difference between reality vs. fantasy. The teacher will create a chart with the class as they discuss the components of what makes something a reality and a fantasy. The students will then talk about the difference between knowing and believing something.
Day 9: Recycling Day
Today the class will discuss the importance of recycling. They will learn how it effects the plant and what they can do to make a difference. The day before each student was asked to bring in an empty tin can. Today the class will place paper on their tin can and decorate it with something they learned about recycling. They have the choice of drawing a picture or writing a phrase. Once every child has their tin completed the teacher will create a class “tin man”. *(The purpose of the tin man is to show the students the importance of recycling in a creative way. They can see their artwork on recycling displayed in the classroom. They will use it as a remembrance of how important recycling is. The teacher attachs a rubric the students must follow while drawing their craft )
Day 10: Wizard of Oz Party
Today the class will celebrate everything they learned throughout the week. The students will turn in all their work and share their Dorothy Story of their own with the class. Have rainbow themed decorations and goodies (supplied by students parents) to celebrate the end of the Wizard of Oz.
