Our theme for this unit is The Wizard of Oz and we chose to integrate literacy into many different topics. The topics we chose to use were science, social studies, music, math and art.

This is a fun way for kids to learn about bones and create their own scarecrow.
This video is an excellent way to engage the students in the theme of the unit and to discuss what they want in their lives.

READING - - Read The Wizard of Oz and watch the
movie. Then create a Venn diagram to
compare the two. Reading the story will
support fluency.
WRITING - - Creating song lyrics will help students
practice different writing genres.
- The creative writing packet is going to
give students opportunities to practice
writing.
SPEAKING - - When the students present their Dorothy
stories it will give the students an
opportunity to practice public speaking
skills
LISTENING - - During Dramatic Friday the students will
be listening to the rhythm of the “I wish I
had a brain” song in order to create
their own lyrics.
VIEWING - - The activity that consists of watching
the movie and then creating a Venn
Diagram supports viewing. The
students must successfully watch and
comprehend the movie in order to
compare it with the book.

- Venn Diagram Comprehension - This is used to measure the student's ability
to compare and contrast.
- Scarecrow Craft Vocabulary - This craft will help students in learning and correctly

interpret them.
- 1900’s Day Comprehension - Students will have a chance to relive a day in the
1900’s. This will not only assist students in
understanding how life was in the past, but it will also
help the students comprehend and understand the
story better.
- Creating Lyrics Motivation - Students will learn to follow and create rhythms.
- Creative Writing Packet Content Knowledge - With this activity students will improve upon their
writing skills
- Brick by Brick Motivation - This activity is a creative way for students to learn
